Information from Competitive Board for Season 2020-2021

Dear Southeast Soccer Competitive Community,


Thank you for being a member of our community.  You all are the reason we have the amazing club we have.  We wanted to write to give you a better understanding of what we are planning if the current pandemic continues to affect our plans to play soccer. We also wanted to give you clarity on what your soccer dues pay for and what our plan is if we don’t play games this fall.

Southeast Soccer Club’s mission is simple - we exist to facilitate children playing soccer.  As one of Oregon’s oldest and largest soccer clubs, we will be here long after this pandemic is under control.  Our club has always been fiscally responsible and has minimal expenses, so we are in a strong position as we enter this soccer season.

Practice and Coaching

Games are fun and are a test of our abilities and skill, but player development happens on the practice field.  Even if we do not play games this fall, we will still be practicing and receiving high quality soccer coaching.  Our goal is to practice twice a week. One of the most important skills we learn on the soccer pitch is learning how to be a teammate. We believe that the social and emotional toll the pandemic has taken on our children is immense. Being able to see and participate with teammates even in a 10x10 square helps our kids feel they belong.

Lower fees for Development and Competitive

Last spring when we were mandated to stay at home our spring season came to an abrupt end.  It took some time but we did receive a refund from the league for the spring games not played.  We also received a refund from the Portland Parks and Recreation for the field rentals that we paid for.  The total of these refunds came to $32 for U8-U10 and $37 for U11-U14 per player.  The board decided to apply these as credits to the fees for the 2020-2021 year.

The fees for competitive and development were further reduced because of the late start to the year as well as not playing in 2 tournaments this summer.  With the credit from the spring, the total reduction for each player was $100 for Development and $200 for Competitive, which is reflected in the fees published for this year.

How Fees are Spent

From the fees we collect, about 70% goes to pay for practice fields and coaching stipends.  Practice field costs have been going up each year because of the lack of field availability from Portland Parks and Recreation. Also, we have been striving to have as many practices as possible on turf fields even though turf fields cost more.  We prioritize the older groups when we do get turf fields, which is part of why there is a difference in cost as they go into the older age groups. We also play most of our games on turf and it helps to practice on the same surface. The other 30% of fees cover club administration, pay for the leagues, State Cup, Presidents Cup or Founders Cup tournaments at the Competitive level.

Fall Soccer Season

We as club leaders, as coaches and as parents, want the fall season to be played. But only if we can do it safely.  If one person gets seriously sick, or worse, it would not be worth it.  We must do our best to prevent the spread of this virus and are following guidelines set forth by the State. We will continue to practice each week as long as OHA and OYSA deem it safe to train.  You will hear soon from your coaches about practice schedules.  Thank you for your patience.  In Phase 1, our practices are designed to comply with the most current policies from Oregon Youth Soccer Association and the Oregon Health Authority.


The policies for how we can practice are constantly changing. We will do our best to keep the SESC community up to date on what practice formats look like, but please know that this could change week to week.

We are planning on being able to play the fall season, but if we are unable to, we will issue you a refund for the fall league fees and the fall tournaments fees, based on the refunds we receive.   If you are making payments, the last payment will be reduced by the credit amount. We are moving the payment schedule so the last payment due will be January 20, 2021. If you paid in full, we will issue you a check for the refund. All refunds will be in January to give the league time to decide the best path forward.

We do not want the cost of our fees to be a barrier to playing. We still have scholarships and partial scholarships available.  Please see our website for details.
